如之前的预告，微软已经正式确认，Windows Server 2008 将于下月正式发布。此前，微软一直没有披露新款操作系统的具体发布日期，只是披露 Windows Server 2008 的发布时间在 2008 年第一季度。
微软表示，Windows Server 2008 将于 2 月份发布，日期在 2 月 27 日或此前。
Windows Server 2008 标志着微软的操作系统首次直接集成了虚拟技术。Windows Server 2008 中其它重要的新功能包括：Server Core - 使用户能够只安装自己需要功能的安装选项、命令行脚本、新版本的 .Net Framework、Network Access Protection。
据 Windows Server 开发部门总经理比尔称，在数周内，Windows Server 2008 将进入其发布前的最后一个阶段。他说，处于该阶段的软件距离发布通常只有 1、2 周时间，要对软件进行修改是不大可能的。
